Parish Pastoral Councils – Helping the parish connect to the wider church
It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day issues that affect our local parish/community and forget that we are part of a wider picture. Remembering that we are part of a universal church means that as individuals, we can go to just about anywhere in the world is still get a sense of belonging. It means that as a parish, we are not alone in many of the things that we try to do, and that we can get help in some of the struggles along our own journey.
Over the weekend of 16/17 August, 54 Parish Pastoral Council members representing 17 parishes from around the diocese met for the “Opening the gifts in Parishes” weekend of formation, sharing and updates.
The main lecture, “Parish Pastoral Council - Powerhouse for the local faith Community” by Sr Cecilia Anning rsj was delivered in 3 parts over the 2 days. Participants were also given updates on some of the things that are happening around the diocese. Bishop Brian announced his decision to proceed with the Permanent Diaconate in the diocese. Mrs Mary Loch delivered the session on Stewardship and gave participants an overview on “A Stewardship Manual for Parishes”, a new resource now available for parishes, and Mr Matthew Vandeleur talked about the Diocesan Assembly that is being planned for 2009.
Feedback received was that the gathering was beneficial in a few ways. The information and formation received was of good value and; the relaxed atmosphere during the breaks and shared meals gave participants an opportunity to meet other Parish Pastoral Council members, share ideas and discuss across parishes some of what had been presented earlier.
It is hoped that participants would take not only what was learnt over the weekend back to their parishes, but also the sense that they as a parish are part of a wider diocesan family.
