Catholic Social Teaching enables us to look at political, economic and social structures in our world using Gospel values.
It is built on a commitment to upholding the dignity of the human person.
The Rockhampton Social Justice Action Group strives to promote a more just society – one in which the rights of no one are ignored, denied or sacrificed for anothers’ advantage.
Conscious that
“The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free” [Luke 4:18-19]
each of us is challenged and empowered to respond to the Lord’s command
“This is what the Lord asks of you, only this, to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God” [Micah 6:8]
Our Principles for Action include:
- Our Dignity comes from our being made in the Image of God
“God created man in the image of himself, male and female he created them” [Genesis 1:27]
- Solidarity commits us to work for the common good of all persons at all levels
“There are no more distinctions between Jews and Greeks, slave and free, male and female, but all are one in Christ jesus” [Galatians 3:28]
- By our Preferential option for the poor, we try first to see life through the eyes of the poor, and then to act accordingly.
“First take the log out of your own eye and then you will be able to see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” [Luke 6:42]
- Because of our unique dignity as stewards of creation, we share with each other and care for the earth and all it provides.
“To the Lord belongs the earth, and all it holds, the world and all who live in it.” [Psalm 24:1-2]
The group aims
- To raise the level of awareness by endeavouring to see life through the eyes of the poor.
- To uphold each person’s unique dignity, rights and responsibilities and to value the earth as gift.
- To work for the common good of all

The subject for the 2008 Social Justice Statement is
A Rich Young Nation :The challenge of affluence and poverty in Australia
Australia has experienced spectacular economic growth and prosperity in recent years and increasingly our international economic status has become a symbol of our national identity.
Yet in Australia there are many who are wealthy, but live in spiritual poverty, and there are those who have been bypassed by the economic growth and live in material poverty.
