The diocese of Rockhampton came into being on 29 December 1882. It was previously part of the greater Brisbane Archdiocese. It is one of 5 in the State of Queensland and one of the twenty eight diocese in Australia. In 1930, the Diocese of Townsville was formed from the Northern part of the Rockhampton diocese. The main industries in the region are mining and farming, and the coastal areas and nearby islands boasts many beautiful tropical beaches. There are spectacular national parks as well as a number of carefully preserved ancient Aboriginal sites. Further west is the great Australian Outback. [More] |

In 1861, Bishop Quinn of Brisbane sent Father Scully to Rockhampton, and the first Mass was celebrated in the Court House. The following year, Father James Duhig arrived, and in 1863, Dean Murlay was appointed the first resident pastor of Rockhampton. [More] |

The first bishop of Rockhampton, Bishop John Cani, commenced the building of the Cathedral. he laid the foundation stone on ... He died in 1898, the year before the Cathedral was dedicated and opened to the public.
